A origem da viola da terra nos Açores está relacionada com a presença da viola portuguesa, trazida do continente no início do povoamento das ilhas. Com som e estrutura características, distingue-se por dois estilos: terceirense e micaelense. Esta, do tipo micaelense, com doze cordas de arame, apresenta no tampo uma abertura com a forma de dois corações (com pontas em sentidos opostos), expressão dos sentimentos do povo micaelense, simbolizando a saudade, a gratidão e o amor. Na cabeça, ao centro, apresenta um pequeno espelho retangular para o tocador poder ver se estava bem penteado. A viola da terra assumiu grande importância cultural na vida dos açorianos, marcando presença em diversas manifestações festivas tradicionais. 18.06.2020 [SFS]

The origin of the Viola da Terra in the Azores is related to the presence of the Portuguese viola, brought from mainland in the early settlement of the islands. With characteristic sound and structure, it is distinguished by two styles: Terceira and São Miguel. This one, of the São Miguel type, with twelve wire strings, has an opening in the top with the shape of two hearts (with the tips in opposite directions), an expression of the feelings of the people of São Miguel, symbolizing "saudade", gratitude and love. On top, in the center, it has a small rectangular mirror for the player to see if he or she was well presented. The Viola da Terra has assumed great cultural importance in the life of the Azoreans, being present in several traditional festive events. 18.06.2020 [SFS]
